Black Sheep

Directed by L.A. Mars

Black Sheep is a surrealist multimedia play devised in mainland China. The work was later translated to English and debuted at Theater for the New City to avoid censorship laws. Mars was brought on to direct the piece and contribute dramaturgical context for the Jewish nature of the piece.

The play explores the life story of Georg Salzmann, a German national struggling to reconcile his love of Jewish philosophy and his family's intrinsic ties to Nazi Germany, as well as the journey of a graduate classroom studying his life's work. Staunchly anti-fascist, this play is about the danger of a world hemmed-in by hatred and a fear of the unknown.

Black Sheep debuted at Theater for the New City in April 2019.
